My Hero

My Hero can't leap tall buildings with a single bound. He
doesn't wear a black costume with a cape and pointy ears.
He hasn't scored the winning touchdown or shot a three -
pointer at the buzzer to win the championship. My Hero
isn't any of those things.

My Hero has scarred and callused hands from years of hard
work. His hair is gray from worrying if he was going to
have enough money to last another year. His voice is deep
and scratchy from the many stories he told. My Hero is all
of these things.

My Hero sat with me when I was scared late at night. He was
by my side when I woke up from burn surgery. He comforted
me when I had to take cold baths cause my fever was too high.
My Hero was all these things.

My Hero has loved his wife for almost thirty years now. He
made sure that I knew the difference between right and
wrong. He taught me how to work hard and the importance of
honesty. My Hero has done all these things.

My Hero has earned my love and respect. No one else could
take his place cause my Hero is my Dad.

What Is A Hero

A hero is a Dad,
who carries your heart onto his with his unconditional love.

A hero is a Dad,
who builds your first pair of wings to enable you to fly on your own.

A hero is a Dad,
who builds your faith when all hope tumbles out from your heart.

A hero is a Dad,
who builds you a magical ladder to keep you high off the ground.

A hero is a Dad,
who builds your confidence so you make it through the wind and rain.

A hero is a Dad,
who builds your strength beyond his own when your life with pain collides.

A hero is a Dad,
who knows when he must step aside when another hero has come to carry your heart onto his.

A hero is a Dad,
who builds his strength of having to let go when walking his little girl down the aisle to place her heart onto the heart of another hero.

When I was young I thought it would be great if I could be a hero...
The one who slays the dragon, or defeats the invincible foe.

The guy who saves the baby from the burning building before she’s engulfed in flames
Then everyone would recognize my courage and forever remember my name.

The heroes I had when I was a boy revolved around sports, the movies and TV
When I grew up so did my heroes, with names like Lincoln, Franklin, and Kennedy.

But as I learned more about my heroes..I was astounded by what I found.
Abe couldn’t discipline his children, Ben abandoned his wife and Johnny fooled around.

How could my heroes not act in real life like they did in books or on TV?
Who would have thought my heroes were human, just like me.

I believe I was looking in the wrong places for heroes, now I think wherever we roam
Our heroes should be more personal, we can find them closer to home.

They are the people who have loved us, who’s guidance and inspiration we have sought
The ones who have stood by us whether we’ve slain a dragon or not.

Could it be our heroes don’t have to save the world or make that winning score?
Could it be our heroes have always been as close as our own front door?

Yes, now that I am older, (some might say past my prime) .
I find the heroes I most look up too have been with me all the time.

I still think it would be great to be a hero but now I look more objectively
My heroes are kind, accepting and supportive people...at least they strive to be.

If I get the chance I’ll still save that baby before she’s engulfed in flames
But now I only care that my friends and family shall forever remember my name.

A Hero

A Hero is someone looked up to,
Who others could love to be,
A Hero is someone, who is very courageous,
And willing to put their life aside for another’s happiness or well being,
A Hero is anybody, anybody who can make someone’s day,
Or to help out with a simple chore,
A Hero does not have to be successful,
Or to complete their great intention,
A Hero does not have to be able to fly,
Nor to have any other superhuman power,
A Hero can be of any sex, race, or species,
They do not have to be human,
A Hero is not somebody, who is good at everything,
They don’t even have to be good at very well anything,
A Hero is somebody, who could only listen,
They could make you smile with out any words,
A Hero is someone, who could stand up for you,
Or to agree in your beliefs,
A Hero could be your Teacher,
helping you learn towards your future,
A Hero is anybody, and everybody,
Everyone is someone’s Hero,
And everybody has a Hero.
