  97.

For Ashraful

Dear Ashraful,
You have inspired me
to write my first poem in Bengali;
our mother tongue.
So this poem is for you.

This ugly barbed wire fences of border
have spoiled
our possible meet and gossips at noon
long ago.

Or before that when (1971) an war broke out
between east and west
scattering confused people away from home
into different directions,
possibility of our meeting at noon ended.

Or long before that
possibility of this meeting diminished
when (1947) boundaries of new born countries
were clearly demarcated.

Or even before that
when you and me jointly killed this possibility
long long ago (1905) being affected by
the mockery of partition of Bengal.

Otherwise in this holiday today
as one of your neighbor
I would have been dining in your courtyard
as a self-declared guest
just like our forgotten ancestors.

My love for you. Stay well.

  98.

a mother is...

a mother is loving,
she stays up all night with
your sicknesses coughing and howling
patting you back, comforting
a mother is loving

a mother is caring
she holds you when your
heart feels like breaking
crying with you when you are aching
a mother is caring

a mother is interested
she asks about your days
and what boys did what and the flirting
“25 cents in the jar please? ! ”
a mother is interested

a mother wants what’s best
curfew broken, I’m so sorry you can’t
late for church family prayers, scripture study
have to get A’s be home before time
a mother knows what’s best

a mother is delicate
“Please don’t do that, come back
you know better choose the right
I love you! ”
a mother is delicate

a mother is you
we’ll get through this together
think of the memories only memories
I am here for you be happy he would want that
a mother is YOU!

  99.

I am the second son

I am the second son
Of my mother
My father is no more.

My mother is with me
I am with my mother
My father is no more.

I am speaking to my mother
In her own language
That are sweet and smooth.

My mother's language is
Giving me new life always
I love my mother.

My mother is here with me
And showing me this world
I love my mother.

For a better world
My mother is telling me
To do something more.

See, my mother is here
At the center of my life my journey
From my mother to my mother this is my journey.

  100.

My Mother- Symbolic Power

My mother is the symbolic power of
Cosmic consciousness and my God.

My mother governs my life my universe
My mother is behind my creation
My preservation.

My mother is divine
And her wills prevails over me.

I am gigantic imagination of mind
Only for my mother.

In this struggle of
Good and evil
Truth and untruth
Virtue and vice
Freedom and involution
Light and darkness
It is my mother
Who can show me
Divine law before me
And save me.

My mother is saying me
Truth alone triumphs
Positive must and
does overcome the negative
And always my mother is here
Rouse me to this truth
And regulate my life.

My mother is the champion of
Positive idealism
Message of my mother is
Self-perfection, equal vision
Balance of mind
Motiveless service to humanity
Unselfishness and
Absolute humility.

And it is true
Cruelty towards any creation
Is cruelty done to one's own mother.

I love my mother.
