  13.

So, “net”

A little song is known as a sonnet
Fourteen lines, iambic pentameter,
With a theme, are made by a sonneteer.
Who create this rule they never forget.
From the word “sonnetto”, the name is set
By Lantini, who is as its maker
Then Petrarch, Dante besides Spenser
Yet the poets try for its power to get

It took outing in thirteen century
Then Shakespeare’s English Sonnet, was run.
Ronsard - Azmatullahs’ sonnet diary,
Then Frost – Duttas’ some sonnet story.
Thru this fashion eight hundred years are gone
I just threw a net on the history

Fourteen Beautiful Birds On Wings

A baker as packs thirteen eggs to claim
A good dozen, a sonneteer— fourteen
Sweet lines in praise of thine slender good frame,
That thine mysterious marvels never lean
Might seem, he too that fledglings fully hatch
Ah, gorgeous birds to be, ready to fly
In time together in one single batch,
Or in formations that but sonnets try.
The eight of them in front to face all strife,
The six that trail, as if in counterpoint,
Resolve to soothe— ah, sonnet’s very life,
As Volta, some poets choose to anoint,
Of whose last two, twain wings of a couplet,
Come with a short song ending the sonnet.

The Sonnet

The sonnet’s form constrains the poet’s hand
From setting out his feelings loud and clear;
It makes his intimations hard to hear
And forces him to choose the safe and bland.
The sonnet’s rhyme restrains the poet’s thought
From flying into fantasy and space,
Though it contains more elegance and grace
Where free verse liberates what has been caught.
But in the sonnet, deeper meanings lie
And hold traditions, ancient and arcane,
That hibernate inside the poet’s brain
And soon he will discover, by and by,
Encapsulated in the sonnet’s shell
Awaits to hatch pure heaven from pure hell.

War At Home

Ever since they took him away,
to fight that God forsaken war.
I daydream in our fields all day.
They took the man that I adore.

Gazing across the windswept grass
and waiting for the time to pass.
The memory of times before,
they took the man that I adore.

I know he’ll walk across that field
with battle wounds yet still unhealed.
My broken heart can take no more,
they took the man that I adore.

Ever since they took him away,
they took the man that I adore.

Author Notes:

Kyrielle Sonnet
A Kyrielle Sonnet consists of 14 lines (three rhyming quatrain stanzas and a non-rhyming couplet) . Just like the traditional Kyrielle poem, the Kyrielle Sonnet also has a repeating line or phrase as a refrain (usually appearing as the last line of each stanza) . Each line within the Kyrielle Sonnet consists of only eight syllables. French poetry forms have a tendency to link back to the beginning of the poem, so common practice is to use the first and last line of the first quatrain as the ending couplet. This would also re-enforce the refrain within the poem. Therefore, a good rhyming scheme
for a Kyrielle Sonnet would be: AabB, ccbB, ddbB, AB -or- AbaB, cbcB, dbdB, AB.
